I like the level of detail you put in the man's face and the elephant's eye. I think it should be carried through the rest of the painting, especially in the animal's feet and trunk and the chain.
I say ditch this painting. Do a composition with the camera much closer, as that's what movies usually do when they're trying to emphasize the emotion occurring.
Unless the idea you're trying to portray is about the big empty room the elephant's in, in that case you might go the opposite to emphasize the isolation (I always remember that far away shot in Fargo with the guy going to his car in the snow)
